During the summer of 1859, a grieving physician reluctantly agrees to accompany a recently freed slave and her enigmatic Caucasian daughter on a challenging five-day trek across the perilous American West. Their goal is to reach a remote town renowned for its Faith Healer. The woman insists that her daughter is possessed by a sinister force, while the doctor suspects she is afflicted with a mysterious illness known as The Sickness. Regardless of the cause, a haunting truth persists: every individual the girl comes into contact with mysteriously dies.
